ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University men’s basketball coach Paul Sather has announced that NSU alum Matt Sevareid has been hired as the program’s top assistant.  Sevareid, who both finished his playing career and began his coaching career at NSU, recently completed his third season as the head coach at Presentation College.

“Matt’s passion for Northern State and our basketball program along with his experience as a head coach set him apart from the other candidates,” said Sather.  “He has experienced basketball at all different levels and understands the expectations here at NSU.  We have worked together in the past and I always appreciated his work ethic and enthusiasm and feel that will translate well for us with our recruiting efforts.”

The pair are no strangers to each other or to the Wolves program, as both men arrived on NSU’s campus in 1998.  Sather was an assistant coach to then head coach Bob Olson and Sevareid took to the hardwood as a player.  During the 1999-2000 season, Sevareid’s senior campaign, he earned honorable mention all-conference accolades while helping the Wolves to a third straight NCAA tournament appearance.  He also led the league in 3-point shooting percentage that season.

The Mitchell, S.D. native then got his start in the coaching realm with the Wolves, serving as a graduate assistant under Don Meyer, with whom he finished out his playing career during his senior season.

From there, Sevareid spent one year as a volunteer assistant at Division I Gonzaga University in 2002-03 before moving to Jamestown College where he served as the head assistant coach.  During his stay with the Jimmies, he helped build the program into a nationally-ranked and respected program, reaching as high as No. 19 in the NAIA polls in his final season.

He then returned to Aberdeen to take over the reins of the PC program.  In his tenure with the Saints, he turned the program around from a 7-18 mark in his first season to a 12-14 mark in 2009-10.  The Saints went 8-6 in conference play last season and finished fourth in the league standings, earning them the right to host a first-round Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play-off contest.

“It’s nice to come home to where you started your career and be around familiar faces,” said Sevareid of his return to the Wachs Arena sidelines.  “The opportunity to sell a program you have so much passion about is exciting.”

Sevareid joins current assistant coaches Dan Magrino and Brad Christianson on the Wolves’ staff.

Sevareid, who resides in Aberdeen with his wife Maria, has three beautiful daughters Madyson, Cameron, and Skylar.
