ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University coach Elyce Kastigar has announced the signing of Rushmore, Minn. native Kari Engelkes to a National Letter of Intent to join the Wolves’ swimming and diving program for the 2010-11 season.

Engelkes, a freestyle/sprinting specialist, will enroll in classes in the fall and join the Wolves for pre-season workouts ahead of NSU’s first meet in October.

“Kari will bring in speed to our sprint freestyle events,” said Kastigar.  “She will be an immediate impact to our 200 and 400 freestyle relays and our 50 and 100 freestyle events.  Kari has great potential for developing into a top sprinter in our conference.  We are excited she will be joining our team and being a part of NSU!”

Engelkes was a top-eight finisher in three different events at the 2010 Minnesota state meet, claiming fourth in the 100, fifth in the 50 and eighth in the 200-yard freestyle events.  She was also seventh in the 50-yard and 12th in the 100-yard free at the regional meet.  She currently holds personal bests of 26.27 seconds (50 free), 59.20 seconds (100 free) and 2:15.00 (200 free).

Engelkes is a recent 2010 graduate of Adrian High School in Adrian, Minn. and competed in the club setting for head coach Donna Damm.  The youngest of three siblings, she is the daughter of Alan and Deanna Engelkes of Rushmore.
