ST. PETER, Minn. One day after picking up their second win of the season, the Northern State University tennis program dropped a pair of matches on Saturday, falling to Gustavus Adolphus 8-1 in non-conference play and faltering 9-0 to Winona State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.

Freshman Jamie Golden picked up NSU’s lone win at No. 1 singles against GAC.  Golden dominated the first set, then adjusted her tactics to meet those of her opponent Julie Bardenwerper to complete the 6-1, 6-4 victory.

GAC, however, re-grouped to sweep the remaining five singles matches and claim the 8-1 win.

The Wolves did suffer the loss of Jessica DesLauriers in the doubles portion of the match.  DesLauriers suffered a wrist injury in the set, forcing her to default out of the singles match against GAC’s Sophie Horton.  The sophomore tried to return against Winona State in the second match of the day, but sat out the singles portion of that match.

Despite the losses, NSU head coach Jessie Daw was encouraged by her team’s performance on the day.

“We matched up well with our opponents and the losses were very close in our No. 1 and No. 2 doubles slots,” said Daw.  “It was a good learning experience, because we played aggressive teams that took control of the net, and we stayed in there and fought for net position.  It was good to see our players do that, and we are definitely improving.”

The Wolves return to the court tomorrow to face Upper Iowa in another NSIC match-up before returning home next weekend to close out the regular season.
