NEW ORLEANS, La. – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Monday their 2009 All-Academic Cross Country Teams, and both the Northern State men’s and women’s teams were named to the lists.
The men’s team tied with Edinboro (Pa.) as top GPA programs (3.54) among the 62 Division II men’s programs receiving USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors, while the women’s team combined for a 3.46 GPA.
This is the 16th-straight year the women have earned this award, encompassing every year that Northern State has been a member of Division II. This is the fifth award for the men's team, and the third in a row for them.
For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, they must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Championship and also have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative GPA.
Junior Kari Linneman (Volga, S.D.) and senior Josh Schmeichel (Milbank, S.D.) were named to the 2009 USTFCCCA Individual All-Academic squads. Linneman is an Elementary & Special Education major at Northern State while Schmeichel is majoring in Mathematics Education.
To qualify for All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have completed at least 12 semester/quarter hours through the semester of competition at the institution to be eligible. The student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and have placed in the top 30% of the total number of athletes eligible to compete at the respective regional championships or have placed in the top 50% of the field at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships.
Northern State University is an NCAA Division II affiliated school participating in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and is located in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
