ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Northern State University wrestling squad sent two members of their team to the NCAA Championships Sunday in the form of 133-pounder Jake Butrous and 197-pounder Matt Meuleners, and finished in seventh place with 46.5 points.
Augustana College won the meet with 120.5 points, and their coach, Jason Reitmeier was named 2010 Super Region #3 Coach of the Year.
Upper Iowa University 165-pounder Travis Eggers was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
Butrous lost his opening round matchup against Shane McQuade of St. Cloud State 11-4 to move down into the wrestleback first round where he faced off against Brian Reisenauer of Minnesota State. Butrous earned a 13-7 victory in that matchup to face off against Adam Jenniges of Southwest Minnesota State in the wrestleback semi finals. He then earned an 11-2 major decision victory there to be given another chance to battle for third place with McQuade. In a tightly contested battle throughout, McQuade sneaked out the victory 13-12 to place Butrous fourth.
Meuleners won his opening round matchup over Nick Shandri of Upper Iowa to face off against Ty Copsey of Augustana, currently ranked #3 in the nation. Copsey earned a 12-6 victory to push Meuleners into the consolation bracket where he faced off against John Makabe of Minnesota State. Meuleners earned a 9-3 decision to face off against Dusty Vliem of the University of Mary, and earned a tiebreak 4-3 overtime decision to finish third.
The duo will head to Omaha, Neb. to take part in the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championships on March 12-13th.
Northern State University is an NCAA Division II affiliated school participating in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and is located in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
