WAYNE, Neb. –
Running a day ahead of schedule due to a blustery and snowy weekend forecast, the Northern State University Wolves competed at the Wayne State College Pre-Regional Invitational on Friday with the women finishing fourth while the men had just four runners in the race and did not qualify for the team standings.

The NSU women finished with 102 team points, led by Kari Linneman’s 12th place individual finish.  The junior covered the 6K course – the same course that will be used for the NCAA Central Regional Championships next month – in 23:32.

Junior Toni Fritz followed with a 17th place finish in a time of 23:51, while freshman Jessica Brandli and junior Andrea Sjomeling finished back-to-back in 24th and 25th place, respectively.  Brandli registered a time of 24:36, while Sjomeling clocked in at 24:39.

Freshman Brittney Olfert rounded out the Wolves’ scoring contingent with a time of 25:10, good for 28th place.  Sophomore Cherry Kolb finished in 35th place with a time of 28:32.

Freshman Krystal Hughes, who had a breakout race two weeks ago at the University of Minnesota's Roy Griak Invitational, started Saturday's race but pulled up with an injury with less than a mile left to go.

The University of Mary claimed the top spot in the team standings with 24 points in the four team scoring field.  MSU Moorhead did not qualify for the team standings.

The men were led by yet another strong performance by junior John Rawerts, who finished fourth overall and just 23 seconds behind the first place finisher.  Rawerts clocked the 10K course in 33:44, edging out WSC’s York Thomas for that fourth place spot by two seconds.

Senior Josh Schmeichel just missed a top-10 finish, claiming the 11th place spot with a time of 34:31.  Sophomore Matt Peterson clocked in at 37:44, good for 27th place, while freshman Jayce Seelig finished in 30th place with a time of 38:38.

MSU Moorhead took the top spot in the team standings with 32 total points.

Friday’s race marked the Wolves’ final tune-up competition before the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships on Oct. 24.  That meet will be hosted by Bemidji State University starting at 11 a.m.
