James Paul
Baseball
James Paul (Sr., SS, R/R, 5-8, 165, Paynesville, Minn. / Paynesville HS) led the Wolves batters with a .542 average in their 1-5 week this week.  He went 13-24 with five RBI, two doubles, and four runs scored with a .625 slugging percentage and a .577 on-base percentage (1.202 OPS).  The senior also earned two walks and was a perfect 2-2 on stolen base attempts.


Ashley Gabler
Softball
Ashley Gabler (OF, So., Minnetonka, Minn./Benilde-St. Margarets HS) led the Wolves with a .357 batting average in six conference games this week.  After struggling in two home games on Wednesday, Gabler bounced back to go 5-for-9 (.556) at the plate for the Wolves in their four-game road trip and racked up a .600 on base percentage.  The sophomore drilled her second home run of the season in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader against 24th ranked Minnesota State, Mankato, breaking up the Mavericks’ shut-out bid in the process.

Wolves Split at Day One of MSU-Billings Tourney

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Northern State University volleyball team split a pair of games during the first day of the Montana State University-Billings Tournament Friday, September 12, at the Alterowitz Gym in Billings, Mont. 

In the first game, the Wolves squared off against the University of Alaska-Fairbanks (5-2) and through four closely contested matches, ended up losing 3-1 to the Nanooks. The Wolves won the first match by a score of 25-17, but then lost the next three by scores of 24-26, 23-25, and 23-25, respectively.

Megan Gilbraith paced the offense once again, netting 37 assists to which Kelsey Aden pounded down for a point 17 times. Kayla Ysteboe and Melanie Perez each added ten kills a piece. Stephanie Nygaard held up the defensive end with 21 digs, and she was aided by Megan Gilbraith with 11, Kayla Ysteboe with 11, and Kelsey Aden with 10.

The Wolves rebounded nicely from their first loss of the season against Notre Dame de Namure (0-11) and won swiftly 3-0, to improve their record to 6-1 on the season. The scores of the sets were 25-12, 25-20, and 25-14.

Megan Gilbraith led the offense nicely once again with 21 assists and also added nine digs on the defensive end. Kelsey Aden led the front line with six kills, and also got help from Jill Rasmussen and Melanie Perez with five kills apiece. Stephanie Nygaard added nine digs, and Perez and Aden each chipped in with six.

The Wolves continue their action at the tournament tomorrow with a match versus the University of Hawaii-Hilo (8-2) at 11:00 a.m. and close out their tournament against host MSU-Billings (2-9) at 3:00 p.m. A reminder that the games will be webcasted at http://www.greatnorthwest.tv/ and the games will be $4.50 each.
